ABOUT REUBEN BRYANT
Truth & beauty

I'm Reuben, a portrait artist from the North of England.
I grew up in Lancaster, on Hope Street — a place that still shapes how I see people. There’s something honest about the North. Less performance. More truth. That’s what I’m always looking for in a face.
My work isn’t about trends or decoration. I’m not interested in making something that just “fits” a space. I’m trying to understand people — what sits underneath expression, posture, and silence.
In my early twenties, I spent time in French Quebec and Japan. Being outside of my own culture stripped things back. It made me more aware of how people present themselves, and how much is left unsaid. That stayed with me.
Most of my work is portraiture. Sometimes in studios, sometimes outside, sometimes with people who’ve never sat for a painting before. I’m drawn to moments where people are slightly unguarded — not posing, not performing.
Recently, I’ve been working on portraits in public spaces around Lancaster, including sessions in Williamson Park. That work was featured in the Lancaster Guardian, but more importantly, it reminded me why I started — painting real people, in real places, without overthinking it.
I don’t paint for approval. I paint to get closer to something honest.
